inspired.

i've been quite a busy girl lately. my first day of class tuesday was really slow and boring and not really what i was expecting out of this new quarter, but class yesterday was the exact opposite. i don't intend on making this blog super long, but if it does get to that point, i'm sorry :) i'd just love to share a piece of inspiration pie with you. onward.

Started my day off LATE as usual to my first class, but i mean who wouldn't be late having to drive a freakin' hour to get to school? haha. so yeah, I was late. got to school and we were having a rally, or more like an "inspirational guest speaker" who goes by the name of Scott Evans. Supposedly he is well known for his inventions in the exercising industry, and it turns out he was also one of the producers or directors of pirates of the caribbean! holy crap. that definitely gave him a lot of credibility because as soon as he said that, i was all ears.

He talked for about an hour, and left us with a couple of things to think about.

He was talking about success, and how even if we have all these big ideas, if we don't know how to market ourselves or put ourselves out there, we will not succeed. he said something along the lines of "if you are a really creative person, but don't have a business mindset, you will not succeed. just like if you are a business person, but don't have any creativity, you will not succeed." i mean of course we'll succeed in our own minds, but we won't succeed in anyone else's eyes.

he also brought up the question of "how did you get to where you are?" and the answer was simple: "the drunkards walk". Its some law in physics that states that all particles are going to make it to their destination at some point in time, but as they are moving, they bump into other particles and it takes some particles longer to get to their destination than others; meaning that we as people are always going to bump into things in our lives as if we are drunk. randomness is always going to get in the way of our ultimate path, but we won't know our destination until we have arrived. looking back we can see how we got to our destination, but on the way there, we don't fully understand why we're going through these random acts until we end up where we want to be. (or something like that. haha)

he was talking about the 3 things that you have to fight against while trying to succeed. the first one is ridicule, from family and friends. the second one is opposing conflict, also from family and friends, telling you you won't succeed. and the third one is yourself. after you are able to break through your ideas and actually get out there and see yourself successful, your family and friends start to wonder "how did you do that?" "how did you get there?" and i just think it's amazing.

so, that just made my whole year. it's amazing the kind of people you meet, and its crazy how you don't realize the resources you have right in front of you. he challenged us to contact at least 5 different people each day before midnight, just to see how they're doing, catch up on old times, and said it would make us feel a lot better. and it goes hand in hand with knowing your resources. ahhhh, life. how beautiful you are to me.

after inspiring me for about an hour, he told us that his brother was the writer, narrator, and director of THE SANDLOT! omg. you're killin' me smalls. hahaha. I was like, dude, this guy is dope. he said the sandlot was based on him and his brothers life growing up, playing baseball, and he used to have to jump over the fence in order to get the ball. cute.

he went on to tell us about "hang-time" and that there is no such thing as it, and you're either going up or you're going down. he says we need to take all the bad things in our lives and bring those down, and the things that we love, all the good things, we need to bring those up. we have to be the best we can be at all times, because we don't deserve being anything less and nobody else deserves less than our best. and that just rhymed :)

the rally went on to give the results of the contest we had in fashion design last quarter, which was to create new dancing uniforms for the sacramento kings dancers, which is freakin' amazing how our school gets connections like that. we got free pizza (i ate 4, yikes!) and i continued my day in marketing, where we got to do some artsy fartsy stuff and i took forever of course. got some starbucks to wake my shit up, and went into my intro class feeling fully refreshed and ready to take in all the knowledge i could. we talked about couture, and counterfeiting and knock-offs and stuff, which was really funny because my teachers over here talking about how knock-offs and replicas has made the industry lose 600+ billion dollars and next thing you know, she pulls out 5 bags and says "here are some of my purses, and one of them is real. can you tell which one it is?" which is kinda hypocritical, since she just got done telling us it wasn't good to buy them. ohhh, teachers these days.

after school had to go straight to drumline practice. i was pretty content when i got there, but i have to admit, leaving, i wasn't so happy. let's not get into details though. today, the kids are performing at their rally and their homecoming game, which should be exciting. i'm excited. and i'm excited about the rest of the year and the years to come. 2008 = great. HOLLA!
